What a pro does

Everything starts at the main valve, which in the older homes around here sits on the basement wall where the service comes through the foundation. Cutting pressure is what makes the rest of the work possible. After that the plumber follows the line back to the split, and the location is rarely a surprise once you know the house. Frost gets deep on both sides of the state line, and the pipes that fail are the ones with the least building between them and that cold: a run through an unheated basement stairwell, a line in a wall on the north face, a stub to an outside spigot that never got drained before the first hard week. Craftsman era homes in the older neighborhoods add another wrinkle, because a lot of them still carry sections of galvanized that rusted narrow years ago and had nothing left to give. The failed length gets cut back to good pipe on both sides and rejoined with fittings matched to what's there. Where copper meets galvanized, that transition gets handled deliberately rather than patched over. The line is repressurized and watched before the wall goes back.

Frequently asked questions

The ice plug isn't usually what opens the pipe. Pressure builds between that plug and a closed faucet downstream and works on the weakest point, and often the split doesn't start moving water until things warm up enough for the ice to release. That's why a quiet freeze turns loud a day or two later.
The break behaves the same, but the shutoff and the checks aren't. On a well property outside Deer Park or out on the prairie you're looking at the pressure tank and the pump as well, since a break can drain the tank and leave the pump running against nothing.
It tends to. Decades of rust build up on the inside and reduce the opening, which raises pressure through what's left and leaves a thinner wall behind it. A lot of the early twentieth century housing stock in Spokane and Coeur d'Alene still has runs of it in place.
It depends on your policy and on the circumstances of the failure, so that conversation belongs with your insurance provider. Take photographs of the water and of the failed section before anything gets torn out, since that record is hard to recreate later.
