Sewer Line Repair
A lateral that's broken keeps releasing waste into the ground under the yard with every flush, so it wants inspecting rather than another clearing.
When this becomes an emergency
- Main line backups that come back within weeks of each clearing.
- A depression or a sunken patch in the yard along the run to the street.
- Sewer odor outdoors that's strongest near the front of the house.
- Drains all over the house slowing together across a season.
What a pro does
A camera and a locator go in before a shovel comes out. The camera identifies the defect and the locator marks its depth and position on the surface, which is the difference between a targeted excavation and a trench across the whole front yard. Both matter more here than in most places, because of what's under the grass. Much of this area sits on basalt with shallow rock and coarse glacial gravel, so laterals were laid at whatever depth the ground allowed and routed around what couldn't be dug. That produces irregular grade, shallow sections, and joints that have been worked on by ground movement for decades. Old clay tile in the established neighborhoods gives roots a joint every few feet to find. Cast iron of the same era rots from the inside instead. Once the plumber knows what's wrong and exactly where, the choice is between an open cut at the failure, a full replacement, or a trenchless method that pulls new pipe along the old path. Rock changes that calculation, since excavation through basalt is a different job than digging in soil and sometimes pushes the answer toward lining the existing pipe. Utility locates come first regardless.
