What a pro does

Counting fixtures comes first. If a single sink is slow and nothing else in the house has changed, the problem lives in that branch and gets cleared close to the fixture. If the basement floor drain is taking water back every time the laundry runs, the blockage is downstream of everything and the whole house is feeding it. Those are different visits with different tools. Housing age drives what the plumber expects to find. In the older parts of Spokane and up on the South Hill, a lot of homes still drain through cast iron and short galvanized branch lines, and both build a rough scaled interior that grabs grease and hair instead of passing it. A cable opens the channel. Whether the pipe still has a usable diameter behind that channel is a separate question and one a camera answers honestly. Out on the newer prairie subdivisions toward Liberty Lake, Post Falls and Hayden, the drain lines are plastic and smooth, so a blockage there is usually something that went down and shouldn't have.

Not automatically. Plenty of cast iron keeps working for decades after a cleaning. What matters is what a camera shows afterward: a scaled but sound pipe can be maintained, while one that's cracked or has lost its bottom is on a different path.
Not the blockages themselves, though grease behaves differently when the pipes running through an unheated basement or crawlspace are cold. Fats that would stay liquid in July set up quickly against a cold pipe wall in January and start collecting.
Plumbers generally prefer you didn't. Caustic products sit in a partly blocked line and have to be cleared safely before hands go anywhere near the pipe, and in most cases whatever caused the blockage is still sitting there when the bottle is empty.
